Left-twining (sinistrorse) perennial with tuberous roots; stems rounded, 2-5 mm thick, tomentose, slightly to densely spiny on basal part.
Leaves compound, alternate, membranaceous, usually pubescent along nerves; leaflets 3; central one cuneate-obovate, apex obtuse, base obtuse to truncate, ca. 22 cm long, 15 cm wide; nerves 5 or 6 usually confluent; petiole terete, 7-14 cm long, vilose, dilated at both ends, older ones quite spiny; petiolules terete, 0.5-1 cm long.
Staminate flowers in dense head-like spikes, each with one bract at base; bracts villose, unequal, ovate to subrotund, glabrous or obscurely pubescent, inner bracts involute, thick, outer bracts smaller, hyaline, white; stamens 6, short; pistillate spike solitary, elongate; perianth segments 6, thick; style columnar, stigma bilobed; ovary tomentose.
Capsules long pyriform, 5.5 cm long, 2 cm wide.
The plats are cultivated for their edible subterritorial tubers.
